Acupuncture is used as another holistic modality to complement western veterinary medicine. It involves the stimulation of specific points located in areas with a high density of free nerve endings, mast cells, small arterioles, lymphatics, and connective tissue. These points typically lie along classic meridians where qi, or the body’s life force, tends to flow. Stimulation of these points has shown to release beta-endorphins, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters to help restore normal body homeostasis and allow innate healing and regeneration processes to function optimally.
Acupuncture is beneficial for musculoskeletal problems, neurologic disorders, performance enhancement, geriatric weakness, and other internal medical conditions. Typically we recommend a series of at least 3 treatments, and frequency depends on the medical issue or condition we are treating. Many times we incorporate electro-acupuncture into our treatments as well, where an electrical lead is attached to the dry needles and connected to an electro-acupuncture machine to provide more effective stimulation.
